This year we celebrate a momentous 25 years of conservation at scale – a journey travelled to make healthy transboundary landscapes a vibrant reality across southern Africa. We are proud of the impact achieved, which bears testimony to the uniqueness of how we work and the many partnerships we’ve been so fortunate to have forged. The timeline in our 2022 Annual Review brings back fond memories that are cherished and provides a solid foundation to continue building on.

In the wake of a global wave of uncertainty, in a time of unprecedented change and in a year of game-changing global frameworks targeting the protection of 30% of land and ocean by 2030, we see in clear context how important it has become to conserve entire ecosystems at scale, beyond international borders. In this publication, we showcase the work we do to protect intact nature – the most effective action to anchor resilience against the effects of climate change.
2022 was an exceptional rewilding year with the introduction of an initial 27 rhino, which gave Zinave National Park the distinction of the first Big Five national park in Mozambique, with founder herds of both white and black rhino welcomed with open arms and strong safeguards. The subsequent birth of a perfect little calf confirmed their comfort and security in establishing a resident breeding population – the first in more than four decades. It is a shining beacon of hope for Zinave’s transformation into a rich and flourishing ecosystem, ready for further rewilding successes.

It was a defining year in our work to protect wildlife with, at the heart of our concern for the planet, our concern for people. As we continue our operations on the ground, we recognise the importance of a conservation approach in which local communities play a leading role. We also acknowledge the profound connection between healthy landscapes, biodiversity and climate. It has been a year of engaging in research and tapping into innovations in science and finance that accelerate conservation across transboundary landscapes.

Peace Parks is working towards a future where balanced ecosystems serve as a climate solution; where nature and people can thrive in the same place, forever. We would like to applaud the governments and communities who acknowledge the vital importance of protecting their natural assets, and who are embracing partnerships to support them in achieving their objectives. We are also deeply grateful to our donors, whose generosity helps make all of this possible.

Reflecting on not only a year but a quarter century, we realise that we have stood together, achieved impact and increased progress in safeguarding a future of #NatureWithoutBorders. Thank you for your ongoing support and motivation on this incredible journey; we hope you are inspired by this year’s Annual Review. With our ambitious roadmap in hand, we look forward to the next 25 years!
